Jefferson County Fair 2014 Logo As part of our campaign to increase public awareness, ECHHO will again have a booth set up at this year's Jefferson County Fair. The fair is open Friday and Saturday, August 8 & 9 from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

If you have friends and neighbors who are not familiar with ECHHO, please encourage them to visit our booth and learn more about what ECHHO does, meet some of the volunteers at the booth, and learn about volunteering opportunities with ECHHO.

We are looking forward to seeing you there. The weather is expected to be perfect for enjoying the outdoors, so come on over and enjoy the fun. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Supporting ECHHO has Never Been Easier!

You probably know that ECHHO receives a lot of its financial support from the community. With more of us getting on the internet these days, there are more options that make it easier than ever to support nonprofits like ECHHO. Besides the traditional methods of sending a check or dropping some cash in our "cookie jar" when visiting our office, we've made it easier for those who prefer the convenience of using the internet.

ECHHO joined "Unite4:Good," a web based organization that is working to engage both local and worldwide audiences to inspire acts of kindness, increase charitable participation and foster a stronger sense of community. These are values that ECHHO shares. Unite4:Good allows ECHHO to collect donations safely through a secure website connection. We added a "donate" button to our home page on this web site. Clicking on this button will bring you to the Unite4:Good system.

We also ventured a little further into the 21st century when we were contacted by a "crowdfunding" donor platform called Giveffect.org. Search for ECHHO when you get to the Geveffect web site. Crowdfunding is a concept arising out of the new social media like Facebook and Twitter. It allows ordinary web users to support specific philanthropic organizations by donating to organizations that share their personal vision for a better world. This will make it easier for folks to learn about and support ECHHO, and by sharing the link to Giveffect with others who may be interested, we can grow a base of ECHHO supporters.

There are hundreds of good causes like ECHHO which lack the funding, technology, resources and public awareness to really communicate effectively. Unite4:Good and Giveffect are really good tools to help connect individuals and non-profits to each other with an efficiency never before seen in the non-profit arena. We may be tucked away here in a small corner of the world, but these internet connections help us encourage others to take action, get involved and harness the power of kindness, compassion and service to transform our community, our country and our world.

ECHHO Volunteers Go that Extra Mile (A Lot of Extra Miles)
to help Kidney Dialysis Patient Receive Life Saving Treatments

Several months ago, we received a request for assistance from a couple who had recently moved to Port Ludlow. Soon after moving to the area, fate had taken an unfortunate turn for them - he was diagnosed with kidney failure and she was in an accident which left her wheelchair bound and unable to drive her car. Desperate to get her husband to his dialysis treatments in Port Townsend, she found out about ECHHO and contacted us. His appointments are very long, averaging over 4 hours, and require 2 volunteers (one to bring him to Port Townsend in the afternoon and another to bring him home in the evening). He has three such appointments each week. Since we began helping him about 4 months ago, our volunteers have been averaging a combined total of about 1,000 miles of driving and 40 hours of service each month! ECHHO volunteers have also been helping her out with rides to her medical appointments and picking up her prescriptions.

We wish to extend a huge heartfelt thanks to the many ECHHO volunteers who have stepped forward to offer their literally life saving help to this couple. This is truly a shining example of ECHHO's mission ". . . to foster a strong independent, healthy and loving community regardless of age, faith, ability or income . . . so that they may continue to live independently."

We are proud of everyone who volunteers for ECHHO!
